The Scottish Highlands, one of the last unspoilt wild places in Europe, attract a large number of tourists. That said, there are still places to be explored in peace, and it's easy to escape the so-called 'civilization'. The Western Isles (Outer Hebrides) are worth a visit too. Harris is a beautiful island of contrasts with spectacular scenery and a unique atmosphere. In the west are vast expanses of white sand whilst the north and east are rugged, rocky places which make you think you have reached the moon.

Scottish Highlands & Islands

In 1996 and 1998 I spent a total of five weeks exploring parts of the Central- and Northwest Highlands, the Isle of Skye and the Western Isles (formerly known as the Outer Hebrides). Skye is particularly famous for its mountain scenery. Many people come here to climb or walk in the Cuillins.

Both trips to Scotland in 1996 and 1998 were self-organised. Having a car is a good idea if you want to explore the Scottish Highlands at your own pace.
