trekking in the patagonian andes

Few places in the world have captivated the imagination of explorers and travellers like Patagonia, a region located at the southern end of South America, shared by Chile and Argentina. This vast, varied region encompasses narrow straits and steep-sided fjords, rugged mountains, windswept plateaux and glacial valleys. In 2011 I spent three weeks in South America trekking in the Patagonian Andes.

Patagonia Tour, 2011

I travelled south on the Carretera Austral, made a jetboat ride on the Lago General Carrera and visited the San Lorenzo region. In Argentina's Los Glaciares National Park I enjoyed close-up views of Cerro Fitz Roy, Cerro Torre and the Perito Moreno Glacier. Another highlight: Torres Del Paine National Park.

The Torres del Paine Circuit circumnavigates one of the world's most spectacular mountain ranges. The terrain varies from grassy meadows and winding rivers to thick virgin beech forest and snowcapped peaks. A highlight is the awe-inspiring view of the Grey Glacier seen from atop the John Garner Pass.
