hiking in the altai mountains
In July 2022 I had the chance to travel to Mongolia as part of a small trekking group. I visited Altai Tavan Bogd National Park in Western Mongolia together with Mongolians of Kazakh origin and the Tuva tribe, as well as camels and horses. On the way I discovered untouched wide mountain valleys, glittering lakes, snow-capped mountains and visited the yurts of the nomads. At the end of an eight-day trek, I also managed to climb Malchin Peak (4050m) to enjoy the fantastic mountain panorama from the summit. A visit to a traditional eagle hunter was another highlight.

Hiking in the Altai Mountains, 2022
Altai Tavan Bogd National Park is located in the north-western tip of Mongolia in Bayan-Ulgii Province along the border with China and Russia. Ulgii is the gateway to the Altai mountains. From there it's a six hour drive to the park on bumpy roads. One of the most popular options for visiting the area remains an extended trek.
