tadrart region, hiking in the algerian sahara

In November 2016, I travelled to the deep southeast of Algeria to explore the Tadrart region south of Djanet, the continuation of the Acacus mountains (or Tadrart Akakus) towards the south inside Algerian territory. This is one of the most picturesque areas of the Algerian sahara, where a sea of sand surrounds isolated sandstone columns and arches. The area is also extremely rich in prehistoric rock art. On my week-long off-road trip I was accompanied by local Tuareg.

Tadrart Tour, 2016

Starting point for the week-long off-road tour was the desert town of Djanet, which is easily accessible from Algiers with Air Algerie domestic flights. The Tadrart is dotted with prehistoric rock paintings, fascinating rock formations and lofty dunes of virgin sand.
