Libya

Fezzan Tour: In 2003, in the Christmas holidays, I travelled trough the Fezzan, Libya's south-western desert province. Starting point for the four-wheel drive trip was the legendary oasis town of Ghadamès.

An illustrated Satellite Image of Libya and its neighbouring countries shows the Sahara's diverse landscape 'from above' and reveals a diversity of land surface features, including ancient lava flows and volcanoes.

There is a list of the nine Fezzan Camps. Libyan tour leader Jalal Azzabi has provided detailed GPS data.

Jalal Azzabi has recently founded his own travel agency, Taziet Tours. If you're looking for a local guide with years of experience in organising and leading desert tours, he's the one you should contact. Jalal made the Fezzan trip special.

Pakistan

Concordia/K2 Trek: By far the most popular trek in Pakistan is the long and demanding trek along the Braldu Valley and Baltoro Glacier to Concordia, a natural amphitheatre at the foot of the Gasherbrum peaks and K2 (8611m).

Five of the world's fourteen 8000m Peaks can be found in northern Pakistan. It is here, that you will find the highest concentration of mountains over 7000m anywhere on earth. There is a list of important Karakoram Peaks above 6000m.

To make yourself familiar with the geography of the trekking area, check out an illustrated Satellite Image of the Karakoram Range. The illustration shows the location of important mountains and the overnight camp sites on the trek from Askole to Concordia and into the Hushe Valley.

The United Nations Cartographic Section has produced an excellent Jammu & Kashmir Map (PDF format).

Nepal

Nepal Treks: In 1998 I spent two exciting months in the Himalayan kingdom of Nepal, trekking both in the Annapurna and Solu Khumbu (Everest) region.

About one-thirds of the total length of the Great Himalaya is contained within Nepal's borders, including eight of the world's fourteen 8000m Peaks. There is a list of important Nepal Peaks above 6000m.

To make yourself familiar with the geography of the trekking area, check out an illustrated Satellite Image of Mount Everest and/or a Satellite Image of the Solu Khumbu region. The illustrations show the location of important mountains, valleys and glaciers.

To help you understand the meaning of Nepali and Tibetan terms, I have provided a Nepal Glossary. The glossary also features a brief introduction of important Hindu and Buddhist deities.
